Building capacity of local trainers for climate-smart agriculture in Lai Chau, Vietnam

  • From 17 to 21 October, the Lai Chau Farmers’ Union, ADDA’s local implementing partner under the Southeast Asia Programme (SAP) in Vietnam, organised a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Lai Chau province. The training took place at the Centre for Community Activities of the Lai Chau Provincial Fatherland Front Committee and brought together 15 local participants. They will play an important role in conducting Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and supporting CSA demonstration fields across the target areas, covering five crops: pear, tea, rice, cinnamon and Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai). What did the trainees learn?
Understanding CSA: Identifying production challenges and climate risks, exploring the three pillars and benefits of CSA, and comparing traditional input-intensive farming practices with CSA approaches through case studies, drawing exercises and learning by doing.
Participatory training skills: questioning and feedback techniques, plus designing and practicing their own CSA lessons.
Practical field methods: making indigenous probiotics and compost, Agro-Ecosystem Analysis (AESA), alternate wetting and drying (AWD) for rice, and organising field day workshops.
Changing perspectives: Experiencing the benefits of CSA first-hand encouraged participants to explore alternatives to input-intensive farming practices and build confidence in promoting more sustainable approaches. What made the training effective?
The combination of technical CSA knowledge and participatory training methods provided a practical and engaging learning experience throughout the five days.
Participants actively engaged in group discussions, CSA knowledge contests and hands-on field exercises.
The training was designed to match the programme's needs while considering the participants' local context, experience and learning capacity.Strengthening local facilitators is an important step towards lasting change. By enhancing their knowledge and practical training skills, the programme is helping ensure that CSA practices can reach more smallholder farming communities across Lai Chau.A big thank you to all participants, trainers and partners for their commitment and contribution!
